South Korean Regulator Investigates Bithumb Data Breach, Says No User Information Leak Found Yet
On October 28, South Korea's Financial Services Commission said it had convened an emergency inspection meeting with the Financial Supervisory Service, the Financial Security Institute, the Digital Asset Exchange Association and other bodies over cyberattacks on major virtual asset service providers, including Bithumb. Bithumb reported that employee information, as well as information about employees of its subsidiaries and partner companies, may have been leaked, and it is still checking whether user information was affected. The intrusion targeted the employee office support system, and no leak of information that could be used for illegal payments or asset transfers, such as virtual asset wallet addresses, has been found so far. Regulators have launched an on-site investigation and said they will strengthen cross-agency cooperation and consumer protection, while also studying measures to reinforce cybersecurity in the virtual asset industry and related sectors.
