This research demonstrates how introducing negative photonic Kerr nonlinearity into the Dicke model can lower thresholds and stabilize superradiance phases even in dissipative environments. By leveraging environmental interactions rather than eliminating them, this approach paves the way for novel laser designs and engineered quantum states without requiring idealized strong coupling conditions.

ETH Team Models Dissipation-Induced Superradiance for Stabilised Lasing Applications

Superradiance typically demands strong light-matter coupling, often proving experimentally elusive. However, incorporating a photonic Kerr nonlinearity allows for a newly predicted superradiant phase exhibiting spin inversion at a lower threshold. Crucially, cavity dissipation then stabilises this previously unstable phase, potentially enabling novel laser designs and exotic quantum states.

A new understanding of how energy loss can unlock superradiance, a form of enhanced light emission, has emerged from investigations into light-matter interactions. Sebastian Schmid and colleagues at ETH, in collaboration with University of Konstanz, orica de la Materia Co, and University of Strathclyde, show that including a negative Kerr nonlinearity within a standard Dicke model overcomes limitations that usually prevent superradiance. The findings reveal that cavity dissipation not only stabilises this superradiant phase, characterised by spin inversion, but also indicates potential routes towards…
