Researchers at Hunan University have identified a distinct scaling behavior in "quasi-Non-Hermitian Edge Bursts" (NHEB) driven by spatially nonuniform loss distributions rather than the standard Non-Hermitian skin effect. This finding clarifies that boundary-localized anomalies can emerge from dissipation profiles alone, offering new mathematical frameworks for understanding edge phenomena in open quantum systems without relying on asymmetric hopping or magnetic flux control.

Hunan University finds that quasi-Non-Hermitian Edge Bursts (NHEB) differ from standard NHEB, even without the non-Hermitian skin effect.

Researchers at the School of Physics and Electronics, Hunan University, have discovered a new effect in non-Hermitian quantum systems: a quasi-non-Hermitian edge burst that can occur even without the non-Hermitian skin effect. The team, including Ze Yang and Wei Li, demonstrated that spatially nonuniform loss, or the distribution of energy dissipation within a material, is key to generating this burst of loss probability at system boundaries. Their analysis reveals the “quasi-NHEB” follows a bulk, edge scaling relation distinct from conventional NHEB, suggesting a different underlying mechanism. The results show that boundary-localized loss anomalies can arise from loss distribution alone, providing new insight…
