This research demonstrates that encoding multiple qubits per photon pair can increase secret key rates in satellite-based quantum communications by up to an order of magnitude. By optimizing performance under realistic conditions with finite signal strength, this approach overcomes previous limitations where maximum efficiency required vanishingly weak signals. The advancement provides a critical pathway toward practical, long-distance secure data transmission for global infrastructure.

Encoding Multiple Qubits Boosts Quantum Communication Efficiency

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min read

An order of magnitude improvement in secret key rate, ten times more secure data, is now theoretically achievable in quantum communications through a new approach to encoding information. Conventional methods maximise efficiency at vanishingly weak signals, yet this work demonstrates optimal performance even with limited photon pairs. This advance offers a pathway towards practical, long-distance quantum cryptography, particularly for satellite links.

A new method for entanglement-based quantum key distribution protocols sharply improves efficiency, according to Vera Uzunova and Marcin Jarzyna of the University of Warsaw. Encoding multiple qubits per photon pair optimises performance in challenging conditions, such as those expected in satellite quantum communications where signal strength is inherently low and background radiation is high. The findings reveal that optimal efficiency is achieved when a finite production probability of entangled photon pairs exists, a departure from conventional communication models. This multiqubit encoding approach can improve the secret key rate by up to an order of magnitude when compared to traditional single-qubit schemes. Optimising quantum key distribution protocols using multiqubit encoding enhances the secret key rate…
