University of Waterloo researchers have established a fundamental limit, k/n, on extracting EPR pairs from multi-party quantum states via distributed monogamy of entanglement. This finding introduces fractional extendibility as a robust metric for quantifying leaked correlations and proves that noisy erasure channels cannot simulate less noisy ones regardless of repetition count. The work refines theoretical boundaries for quantum information flow without suggesting immediate practical breakthroughs in hardware performance.

University of Waterloo researchers proved distributed monogamy of entanglement, showing a limit—k/n—to extracting EPR pairs from multi-party systems.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo have identified a fundamental constraint on how entanglement, a key resource in quantum technologies, can be shared among multiple parties. Their work reveals that the “distributed monogamy of entanglement” principle dictates that, for any quantum state involving ‘n’ systems, the maximum average probability of extracting an entangled pair from a random subset of ‘k’ systems is limited to the fraction k/n. This isn’t simply a mathematically defined upper bound on what can be extracted; the research builds on this foundational principle. The team further demonstrates that a quantum erasure channel with an erasure probability exceeding one half cannot simulate a less noisy channel, even with asymptotically many uses, challenging assumptions about channel improvement through repetition.…
