This study completes the computational complexity landscape for approximating stabilizer states, proving that seven of nine specific variations are NP-complete and thus fundamentally intractable for classical computers. The findings establish hard limits on simulating certain quantum systems using simpler product states while identifying two remaining problem types where efficient solutions may still exist. This work clarifies the inherent boundaries of classical computation when attempting to model complex quantum symmetries.
Researchers Classify Complexity of Stabiliser State Problems

Until now, approximating complex quantum states with simpler ones has been an incomplete picture, some scenarios understood, others left as open questions. This changes with confirmation that seven out of nine variations on finding the closest stabiliser product state are computationally intractable, proven to be NP-complete. The remaining two can be solved efficiently using existing methods, finally delivering a complete computational landscape for this essential task.
The computational complexity of finding the closest approximation to a given n-qubit stabiliser state using simpler ‘product states’ is now fully classified. This classification identifies nine distinct problem types, seven of which have been proven to be NP-complete, meaning they are amongst the hardest problems a computer can solve. The results offer a complete understanding of how difficult these calculations are and build upon previous work by clarifying their inherent limitations. Complex ‘stabiliser’ quantum states can now…
