This research presents a significant advancement in computational condensed matter physics by enabling accurate calculations of nonlinear electron-phonon interactions, which are critical for modeling superconductivity and polaron formation. By resolving the trade-off between precision and feasibility through a new theoretical framework, this work removes long-standing barriers to simulating complex material behaviors essential for next-generation quantum materials design.

Until now, calculating how electrons vibrate within materials demanded compromises between precision and feasibility. This work delivers a computational method for determining nonlinear electron-phonon interactions, previously inaccessible diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements, enabling calculations applicable to any order. Demonstrated on diamond, lithium fluoride, and graphite, it generalises existing equations to include these second-order couplings essential for accurate modelling of polaron formation energies and hopping barriers.

Electron-phonon interactions play a central role in many condensed matter phenomena, including electrical transport, superconductivity, polaron formation, and ultrafast carrier dynamics. However, research has traditionally focused on linear, first-order electron-phonon couplings. Second- and higher-order nonlinear interactions are often neglected because calculating them accurately in real materials can be computationally demanding, while existing methods have struggled to provide both diagonal and off-diagonal coupling matrix elements.
