This research advances the theoretical modeling of polaritons by reducing the exponential computational cost associated with scaling system size and excitation levels. By leveraging symmetry principles within the Tavis-Cummings model, the team enables accurate simulations of complex light-matter interactions that were previously intractable. This breakthrough is critical for accelerating the design and optimization of next-generation optoelectronic devices and energy storage systems reliant on hybrid quantum states.

University of Turku Team Simplifies Complex Light-Matter Models

Calculating polariton behaviour typically demands computational effort that grows exponentially with both system size and excitation level. This work circumvents this limitation, reducing dimensionality from an exponential dependence on emitter count and excitations to solving matrices dependent only on excitation numbers. Consequently, theoretical investigations can now extend beyond single-excitation regimes, previously intractable for all but the smallest models, opening avenues towards understanding more complex light-matter interactions.

Theoretical limitations in describing light-matter interactions within optical microcavities have historically restricted calculations to systems with only a few excitations. A team at University of Turku has now extended polariton theory, exploring hybrid light-matter states called polaritons, to encompass an arbitrary number of emitters and excitations using symmetry principles derived from the Tavis-Cummings model. This extension broadens theoretical understanding of polaritons, key for technologies like optoelectronics and energy storage. The team developed a new method to…
