This breakthrough leverages quantum sensing in hexagonal boron nitride to accelerate magnetic field mapping from hours to minutes, enabling real-time, high-resolution imaging at the micron scale. By utilizing electron spin resonance frequency tracking, this method significantly improves acquisition speed and sensitivity without sacrificing diffraction-limited resolution. The advancement represents a critical step forward for applications requiring dynamic monitoring of microscopic magnetic sources in research and development.
Researchers Map Micron-Scale Fields Ten Times Faster

Magnetic images once required hours of painstaking data collection but are now achievable within minutes thanks to new advances in quantum sensing. Frequency tracking of electron spins in hexagonal boron nitride allows real-time monitoring of magnetic fields and detailed three-dimensional mapping of sources down to micron scale. This approach successfully mapped the field pattern from a conical metallic tip with unprecedented speed.
Real-time three-dimensional magnetic mapping is now possible utilising negatively charged boron-vacancy centres in hexagonal boron nitride. Previously, obtaining magnetic images of micron-sized regions required integration times lasting hours; the process can now be completed within minutes utilising frequency tracking of electron spin resonance signals. This technique achieved shot-noise limited sensitivity of 54 microteslas per root Hertz and reduces acquisition times by at least one order of magnitude compared to conventional methods. A quicker method…
