This paper gives criteria for when continuous-variable graph states can be converted into one another using Gaussian local unitaries, and shows that adding qumodes to these states is exactly impossible but approximately achievable with enough squeezing. For quantum information researchers, the practical takeaway is that resource requirements (squeezing levels) set the real cost of modifying cluster-state topologies, so the results are most useful as theoretical constraints for designing CV architectures. The reporting is repetitive and the claims are reported only at a high level, so readers should consult the underlying paper for the specific conditions and proofs.

Researchers Find Limits on Adding Modes to Quantum Entanglement

Can purely imaginary and off-diagonal real continuous variable entangled states ever be truly interchangeable through standard quantum operations? This work establishes criteria, valid even with limited experimental resources, determining if a conversion between such states exists, or definitively proves it impossible. Furthermore, it demonstrates that adding new entanglement modes to these graph structures requires substantial squeezing to avoid altering their fundamental topology.

Criteria determining when complex graph states, used in continuous variable quantum information processing, can be converted into one another using Gaussian Local Unitary (GLU) transformations have been determined. These states exhibit rigidity preventing exact modifications to their structure via qumode local addition; however, approximate additions are possible under conditions of sufficient squeezing. Rules governing how different types of entangled light, known as complex graph states, can be converted into one another using specific operations called Gaussian Local Unitary (GLU) transformations…
