This paper presents a novel high-voltage amplifier design utilizing optocouplers as linear feedback elements, specifically targeting the drive requirements of electrostatic actuators in robotics and instrumentation. By achieving 20-kV output with sub-milliamp currents and improved bandwidth over traditional PWM methods, the work addresses critical hardware constraints for next-generation actuation systems. While the application is physical, the core contribution lies in advancing control circuit architectures essential for advanced robotic manipulation and precision sensing.
High-Voltage Optocoupler Amplifier for Electrostatic Actuators
arXiv:2609.29914v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Many electrostatic actuators require multi-kilovolt drive voltages at sub-milliamp currents, a task poorly suited for conventional switching devices. As an alternative, we demonstrate a high-voltage amplifier using optocouplers as active elements. The amplifier produces a 20-kV peak-to-peak output with up to 500 Hz bandwidth while maintaining a minimal component count. By using optocouplers as linear devices in feedback, lower harmonic distortion and higher bandwidth are achieved than offered by equivalent PWM amplifiers. This design improves the viability of electrostatic actuators by providing a simpler method to achieve useful drive waveforms.
