This research establishes discrete log-concavity for Schrödinger operators to derive improved spectral gap bounds in adiabatic quantum optimization. By extending analysis from linear to quadratic potentials, the study demonstrates that quantum tunneling offers broader speedup potential across convex landscapes with spikes. These theoretical advances directly enhance the reliability and efficiency of future quantum algorithms tackling non-linear challenges.

Braida and Colleagues Models Log-Concavity Framework for Discrete Schrödinger Operators

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Could quantum optimisation algorithms benefit from tunnelling even when faced with complex, non-linear challenges. This work extends the analysis of the “Hamming weight with a spike” problem beyond linear potentials to quadratic ones, revealing a pathway for potential speedups. Furthermore, new spectral gap bounds improve upon previous findings for convex potentials established in 2014.

Arthur Braida and colleagues at the Paris Cité University investigate computational speedups via quantum tunneling in Adiabatic Quantum Optimisation (AQO). Building on previous work with the “Hamming weight with a spike” problem, they extend the analysis to a wider range of potentials. This reveals discrete log-concavity of the ground state as a key structural property. This framework yields new spectral gap bounds, surpassing previously known limits. It also extends perturbative analysis to include convex potentials, specifically demonstrating a transition from linear to quadratic potentials. The findings sharply indicate that quantum tunneling may be more broadly applicable to convex potentials containing spikes, potentially enhancing the performance of AQO algorithms. Spectral gap bounds…
