This study experimentally rules out discrete noncontextual models that rely on finite measurement configurations using Gleason's theorem and the Kochen-Specker framework. By proving quantum theory evades global sections of all finite-valued presheaves, researchers establish contextuality as a verifiable resource for future computing and cryptographic applications.

Finite Tests Rule Out Discrete Alternatives to Quantum Theory

New research rules out noncontextual empirical models with probabilities from finite subsets, challenging certain discrete alternatives to quantum theory.

Researchers have constructed finite measurement configurations capable of ruling out a specific class of alternatives to quantum theory, challenging deterministic noncontextual models with outcome probabilities drawn from any finite subset. Building on Gleason’s theorem and the Kochen-Specker (KS) theorem, this work demonstrates a way to experimentally disprove discrete, non-deterministic theories, moving beyond purely theoretical limitations to establish testable boundaries for quantum mechanics. The study extends the Abramsky and Brandenburger framework by introducing and proving that quantum theory evades “global sections of all finite-valued presheaves.” This finding, detailed by Ravishankar Ramanathan of The University of Hong Kong, further establishes contextuality as a…
