This article argues that enterprise AI failures stem from a lack of shared, executable context rather than model limitations or orchestration tools. It proposes the "Knowledge Layer" as an engineered foundation where ontologies, data, and memory allow agents to interpret business intent consistently across the organization. For readers focused on practical AI deployment, this highlights the critical shift from simply scaling models to building governed, real-time knowledge graphs that prevent agent divergence.

This article is a Korean translation of the Neo4j official blog post 'The knowledge layer for enterprise AI' (July 20, 2026). A manifesto for enterprise AI with rich context. The reason enterprise AI fails is not because of the models. Cutting-edge LLMs become cheaper and more...

This article is a Korean translation of the Neo4j official blog post "The knowledge layer for enterprise AI" (July 20, 2026). Enterprise AI fails not because of the model or the harness. It fails because the agent does not understand the business environment in which it operates. This is because these meanings have never been explicitly recorded. Applications know that `status = 2` means "pending review hold," and analysts know it too, but agents do not. Building such meanings individually for each agent creates multiple independent replicas of enterprise knowledge, which diverge over time. The solution is the opposite: make agents lighter and make the shared foundation smarter. The Knowledge Layer (KL) is a shared, governed foundation where enterprise knowledge resides. It goes beyond defining concepts like a data catalog; it is actually executable. The Knowledge Layer interprets intent between data and agents, selects sources, applies policies, and logs execution processes. The Knowledge Layer consists of the following three elements: Ontology: A real-time map showing business concepts, processes, policies, systems, and data assets. Enterprise Data: The evidence for answers. Memory: An element that leaves a decision-tracking log with every execution so that the next agent can pick up where the…
