estimating-and-contingency
From the author
Produces a cost or effort estimate someone can defend — decomposing the work, choosing between analogous, parametric and bottom-up methods, documenting the basis and its assumptions, expressing confidence as a range, and sizing contingency and management reserve separately. Use this to build an estimate, challenge one you have been handed, work out why estimates keep coming in low, or decide how much reserve a portfolio actually needs.

- cost-accountingcbrock84/headcountEstablishes what something actually costs — fixed, variable and mixed cost behavior, absorption versus variable costing, job-order, process and activity-based methods, breakeven and operating leverage, and price/volume/mix decomposition. Use this to set a price floor, explain why revenue or margin moved, decide make versus buy, judge whether a product line earns its place, or work out how an allocation basis is distorting a reported margin.Finance★ 2.1K
- maintenance-and-reliabilitycbrock84/headcountKeeps production assets available — ranking equipment by consequence of failure, setting preventive and predictive intervals, sizing spares, and moving a plant off reactive maintenance. Use this to build or fix a maintenance program, decide what to put on a PM schedule, diagnose repeat failures on one asset, justify spares inventory, or work out why a plant that maintains everything still has unplanned downtime.Planning★ 2.1K
- dependency-and-risk-managementcbrock84/headcountManages delivery risk and cross-team dependencies — identifying, sizing, mitigating and escalating what could stop the work. Use this to build a risk register that gets used, manage dependencies between teams, decide what to escalate and when, or work out why the same risks keep materializing unmanaged.Other★ 2.1K
- treasury-and-liquiditycbrock84/headcountManages cash and liquidity — cash forecasting, runway, working capital, banking structure, and currency and counterparty exposure. Use this to build a cash forecast, extend runway, improve working capital, decide where cash should sit, or assess exposure to a bank, currency, or customer concentration.Other★ 2.1K
- schedule-development-and-analysiscbrock84/headcountBuilds and interrogates a project schedule — logic-driven sequencing, dependency types and lags, float and the critical path, resource loading and leveling, schedule risk analysis, and measuring progress against a baseline rather than against optimism. Use this to construct a schedule, audit one you have inherited, find out why a plan keeps slipping, work out what a date change actually costs, or judge whether a reported percentage complete means anything.Planning★ 2.1K
- budgeting-and-forecastingcbrock84/headcountRuns the planning cycle — annual budget, rolling forecast, consolidation of business unit inputs, and the variance analysis that explains actuals against plan. Use this to build or challenge a budget, run a forecast cycle, consolidate departmental submissions, explain why results diverged from plan, or improve forecast accuracy.Planning★ 2.1K
