This summer program at Los Alamos National Laboratory highlights the growing emphasis on practical quantum algorithm development, hardware simulation, and state reconstruction techniques. With over 1,000 applicants competing for 20 spots, the intense demand underscores the field's rapid maturation from theoretical concepts to collaborative, hands-on research environments.
UNM Experts Present at Quantum Computing Summer School

This past summer, 20 students were selected from more than 1,000 applicants to participate in the Quantum Computing Summer School, gaining hands-on experience with Los Alamos National Laboratory’s quantum computing experts. The school combined lectures by distinguished experts, including those from the University of New Mexico, with collaborative research projects and mentor-led research.
More than 1,000 applicants vied for just 20 spots in the Quantum Computing Summer School at Los Alamos National Laboratory this past summer, demonstrating intense demand for specialized training in the field. The school paired students with Los Alamos experts on projects ranging from quantum algorithms to hardware implementation, scientists Torin Stetina and Vasilis Belis presenting on quantum spectral methods for machine learning. Rolando Somma discussed shadow Hamiltonian simulation as a compressed framework for addressing otherwise intractable simulation problems. The program was hosted…
