This study establishes fundamental limits on extending quantum theory by proving that no compositional structure larger than the standard quantum tensor product can satisfy operational superposition principles derived from prepare-and-measure experiments. By grounding these definitions in observable statistics rather than abstract mathematical frameworks, the research clarifies the unique role of entanglement and uncertainty within the core quantum formalism. These findings constrain future theoretical extensions while reinforcing the robustness of current quantum mechanics against alternative non-signalling compositions.
University of York Team Defines Limits of Quantum Superposition

No extension of the Quantum Tensor Product admits a Superposition principle. Until now, defining superposition relied on complex mathematical structures rather than direct experimental observation. This work establishes operational ‘superposition principles’ rooted in prepare-and-measure experiments, demonstrating no larger compositional structure beyond the standard quantum framework satisfies them.
A new formalism concerning indefinite causal order and non-classical gravity tests, requiring a theory-independent, operational definition of superposition, is being explored by Vincenzo Fiorentino and Kuntal Sengupta and ICTS-USTCS respectively. They define superposition utilising the framework of Generalised Probabilistic Theories, grounded in observed statistics derived from prepare-and-measure experiments. Three superposition principles have been formulated to examine transferable…
