This is a field demonstration of entanglement-based QKD (BBM92) using a quantum dot source with frequency conversion to the telecom C-band over a 1.59 km installed campus fiber. The reported 4.70% QBER sits well below the 11% security threshold, and the 40.87% post-processing retention ratio is the number to watch, since it sets the real secret-key yield. Quantum dot sources offer deterministic, sub-Poissonian emission, but this result is a single short metro link, so scaling and rate-per-source comparisons with SPDC and attenuated lasers remain open questions.
University of Stuttgart Deploys Quantum Dot QKD Link Using Frequency Conversion Over Campus Fiber

The University of Stuttgart, in collaboration with Saarland University and Leibniz IFW Dresden, successfully deployed an entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) link using a quantum dot photon source. The system generated 14.2 Mbit of secure key material over a 1.59 km fiber link, achieving one-time pad image encryption. This demonstrates the viability of quantum dots with frequency conversion for metropolitan quantum key networks.
