The deal combines Quantum Design's measurement platforms with Oxford Instruments NanoScience's large-scale dilution refrigerators and high-field magnets, which are increasingly needed to build and test superconducting and spin-qubit quantum computers. For quantum readers, the signal is that cryogenic infrastructure is becoming a consolidated supply bottleneck, though the article is mainly a corporate announcement with few performance or capacity details.

Quantum Design's acquisition of Oxford Instruments NanoScience has created a global company with the engineering firepower to create innovative measurement solutions and large-scale cryogenic systems for quantum computing and physics research The post Technology companies join forces to boost scientific discovery and quantum scale-up appeared first on Physics World.

When Oxford Instruments sought to sell its NanoScience business in 2024, the goal was to find a partner that would enable the physics-based business to thrive in a global market. The ideal fit turned out to be Quantum Design, a US firm based in San Diego, California, that designs, manufactures and distributes scientific instruments for understanding the properties of materials. In January 2026 the acquisition was complete, and Quantum Design Oxford was formed. “In Quantum Design, we have found a natural home,” says Matt Martin, Managing Director of Quantum Design Oxford. “We both have a similar focus on cryogenics, magnets and measuring physical properties, and we share the same philosophy for making complex technologies simple to use. But Quantum Design will enable us to scale quickly with its global network for sales and customer service.” The…
