This study marks a significant breakthrough in quantum simulation by achieving fully programmable control over massive two-dimensional Dirac dynamics using superconducting circuits. By successfully observing rotational Zitterbewegung and independently tuning mass and momentum, researchers have moved beyond previous limitations restricted to one-dimensional or massless systems. While current decoherence limits scalability, this advancement provides a critical experimental platform for modeling complex materials and fundamental relativistic quantum phenomena.
Technion Researchers Simulate Relativistic Particle Motion with Two Dimensions and Mass

Until now, simulating the behaviour of electrons moving in two dimensions with mass has remained an elusive goal for quantum computing platforms. This work demonstrates fully programmable control over such dynamics using superconducting circuits, representing both momentum components as measurable quantum operators. Observing rotational Zitterbewegung, the rapid oscillatory motion predicted by Einstein’s theory, confirms this new level of control and opens avenues to explore complex materials.
Quantum simulations reveal one-dimensional Dirac dynamics and two-dimensional massless Weyl dynamics. Programmable simulation of massive two-dimensional Dirac dynamics remained experimentally unexplored until now. A two-dimensional free Dirac Hamiltonian is realised in circuit QED, featuring independently tunable spin-momentum couplings and mass via a single Rabi-driven qubit coupled to two modes of a multimode cavity. Observations confirm rotational Zitterbewegung of a two-dimensional massive Dirac particle and its dependence on the effective mass. Time-dependent master-equation simulations support…
