MBUndo is a compiler pass that automatically finds where ancilla qubits can be measured and uncomputed, replacing costly unitary uncomputation gates with cheaper measurements and phase corrections. The reported result is more than 36.5% fewer T gates than existing uncomputation synthesizers across 22 benchmarks, though these are compiler-level gains on specific benchmarks, not hardware demonstrations. For quantum algorithm developers, the practical value is that T-count reductions like this can lower fault-tolerant resource costs without manual circuit rewriting.

Researchers show how to automatically uncompute ancilla qubits with measurements

University of Wisconsin–Madison scientists developed MBUndo, a tool that automatically transforms to use measurement-based uncomputation.

Shengyuan Yang and Charles Yuan of University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed MBUndo, an integrated compiler pass that automatically converts quantum circuits to use measurement-based uncomputation. The new system addresses a longstanding bottleneck in quantum algorithm development, as researchers previously had to manually transform circuits to replace costly quantum gates with cheaper measurements and phase corrections. This automatic transformation was previously impossible due to unknowns regarding where measurement-based uncomputation applies and which gates realize it for any given computation. Evaluations on 22 benchmarks reveal MBUndo achieves greater than 36.5% reductions in T gate counts over existing uncomputation synthesizers.…
