This is foundational quantum information theory: a classification of which sets of five four-party orthogonal product states can be told apart using only local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Of 371 configurations, 355 are perfectly distinguishable this way and 16 are not. The result matters mainly to researchers working on entanglement, nonlocality, and multiparty protocols, and it extends earlier work on two- and three-party systems. It does not yet point to a practical device or algorithm.

Researchers Distinguish 355 Sets of Five Quantum States with Local Operations

Quantum Zeitgeist3 min read

Of 371 possible configurations involving five entangled quantum states, a surprising number, just 16, defy identification using standard methods of limited communication. This work fully classifies these arrangements, demonstrating perfect distinguishability via local operations and classical communication in the vast majority of cases. Extending previous solutions to simpler systems, it reveals underlying structure governing how entanglement can be reliably identified.

All possible configurations of five quadripartite orthogonal product states, sets of quantum building blocks, have been classified, revealing that most of these states can be perfectly distinguished using only local operations and conventional communications. Out of the total 371 distinct arrangements examined, 355 instances are uniquely identifiable through this method; however, sixteen specific configurations remain indistinguishable with these techniques. A thorough mapping…
