This theory paper modifies the Yang-Yang entropy formula so it can predict the entanglement between a freely expanding fermionic gas and its finite reservoir, a case earlier calculations handled poorly. It is fundamental quantum physics rather than a device or algorithm, so its near-term value is to theorists working on entanglement dynamics and Page-curve behaviour. Its claims would be stronger with independent numerical or experimental validation.

Researchers Derive Fermi Gas Correlations Using Hydrodynamics

Quantum Zeitgeist4 min read

Entanglement between quantum systems and their surroundings typically diminishes with increasing complexity, but calculations of that environmental entanglement have consistently failed until now. This work resolves an outstanding problem by modifying how entanglement entropy is calculated within established formulas, correctly predicting behaviour even as systems interact with vast reservoirs. A new approach accurately captures reservoir von Neumann entropy using hydrodynamic descriptions of expanding free fermionic gases.

A new hydrodynamic description accurately predicts entanglement entropy for both a quantum system and its surrounding environment during free expansion; previously calculations failed to capture how much information resides in that environment when dealing with finite systems. Atharva Naik and colleagues refined how phase space density, a measure of particle distribution, is used within an existing formula, known as Yang-Yang entropy. The team refined a method to calculate entanglement, how connected quantum systems “know” about each…
