This project marks a significant step toward a functional quantum internet by linking three trapped-ion processors across hundreds of kilometers using quantum repeaters. The initiative aims to integrate isolated quantum hardware into a full-stack network capable of supporting real-world applications, positioning Europe as a leader in this infrastructure.
Quantum internet group Innsbruck network links three trapped-ion quantum computers

The University of Innsbruck will link trapped-ion quantum processors across hundreds of kilometers of optical fiber within a prototype for a future quantum internet, receiving €5.4 million from the EU as part of the Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA) consortium of over 50 European research partners. The project will include three trapped-ion quantum computers and utilize quantum repeaters to enable transmission over the long-distance fiber-optic link.
