Quadratic speed-up of quantum adiabatic evolution with engineered dissipation

arXiv1 min read

arXiv:2606.05815v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Quantum adiabatic evolution is often slowed by nonadiabatic leakage near small spectral gaps. We propose an engineered dissipative protocol that continuously relaxes these excitations during the adiabatic evolution. In the ideal limit, a spectrally filtered jump operator induces downward transitions in the instantaneous energy eigenbasis while leaving the instantaneous ground state dark. An effective avoided-crossing analysis shows that in the regime where the engineered relaxation strength is much larger than the minimum gap, the runtime scaling can improve from the closed-system behavior $\mathcal{O}(\Delta^{-2})$ to $\mathcal{O}(\Delta^{-1})$. Finite-temperature upward transitions introduce a thermal error floor, the inverse-gap runtime estimate remains applicable when the thermal excited-state population at the minimum gap stays below a fixed fraction of the target error tolerance. Numerical results show improved ground-state preparation and robustness against weak upward-jump errors over closed-system annealing. We also discuss possible superconducting-circuit implementations using structured bosonic reservoirs and the microscopic consistency requirements for realizing the effective dynamics.
