Researchers have introduced magnon momentum microscopy, a soft-X-ray technique that directly images nanometre-scale magnon populations and nonlinear interactions in momentum space. By overcoming previous detection limits for short-wavelength spin waves, this method establishes a versatile platform for exploring wave-based information processing beyond conventional electronics. The advancement enables flexible experimental geometries without relying on patterned antennas, offering new tools for studying exchange interactions in materials like yttrium iron garnet.

Nanometre-Scale Magnons Detected With Soft X-ray Microscopy

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min read

Researchers have developed a soft-X-ray technique, magnon momentum microscopy, to directly image magnon populations across two-dimensional momentum space. This allows for the study of short-wavelength spin waves and reveals nonlinear magnon interactions, previously difficult to detect, in materials like yttrium iron garnet.

Researchers have, for the first time, directly imaged magnon populations across two-dimensional momentum space using a new technique called magnon momentum microscopy. This resonant magnetic soft-X-ray scattering method overcomes a key experimental challenge in the field: detecting magnons at nanometre wavelengths, where exchange interactions govern their dynamics. Applying the technique to yttrium iron garnet, the team revealed a rich variety of previously unobserved nonlinear magnon interactions. With its ability to capture these interactions over large regions of the dispersion plane, magnon momentum microscopy establishes a versatile platform for exploring short-wavelength and nonlinear magnonics, potentially advancing wave-based information processing beyond conventional electronics. The ability to directly visualize the behaviour…
