The deal is a corporate merger, but its rationale is AI data-centre demand. Optical interconnects are becoming a constraint on AI cluster scaling, and Nvidia's reported influence and $2 billion stakes in both firms show how much the AI hardware supply chain is shaped by a single dominant buyer. Much of the detail comes from anonymous sources, so the level of Nvidia's involvement should be treated as reported rather than confirmed.

Marvell Technology Inc. and Lumentum Holdings Inc. reportedly received the backing of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang before reaching a merger agreement valued at nearly $103 billion. According to people familiar with the matter, Marvell CEO Matthew Murphy and Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston sought Huang's views during a phone call before the deal was announced. Huang's support highlights how Nvidia, a leader in AI, is encouraging consolidation among key suppliers, as demand for faster optical connectivity has become a bottleneck for the rapidly growing construction of data centers. As the leading chip supplier for training and running large language models, Nvidia earlier this year invested $2 billion each in Marvell and Lumentum.
