This theoretical work revisits the quantization of electric charge by deriving a simultaneous condition for magnetic flux and charge through the Schrödinger equation for a charged particle near a solenoid. The authors establish the Lorentz invariance of this relationship by characterizing magnetic flux as a Lorentz pseudoscalar, offering a fresh perspective on a foundational question in quantum physics. For a technical audience, the key takeaway is the rigorous mathematical demonstration linking gauge invariance and charge quantization within a relativistic framework.

Magnetic flux as a quantized Lorentz pseudoscalar and its relation to electric charge quantization

arXiv2 min read

arXiv:2606.05955v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In this paper, we re-examine the well-known question of why electric charges exist only in quantized portions. In this context, we revisit the motion of a charged particle in a field-free region around a current-carrying solenoid. Solving the corresponding Schr\"odinger equation leads to a simultaneous quantization condition for the magnetic flux and the electric charge. We also demonstrate the Lorentz invariance of this condition by showing that the magnetic flux behaves like a pseudoscalar under Lorentz transformations.
