Lumentum's secured orders through 2029 underscore the critical hardware bottleneck facing high-speed AI data center expansion, where optical interconnects are essential for scaling compute clusters beyond current limits. The significant investment from Nvidia and persistent supply shortfalls highlight that advanced indium phosphide devices remain a central infrastructure constraint rather than an incidental component in the AI value chain.
Nvidia-backed Lumentum: Optoelectronics capacity orders booked through 2029
Driven by tech companies racing to build high-speed AI data centers, Lumentum Holdings Inc.'s optoelectronics capacity is nearly sold out, with orders extending through 2029. Earlier this year, Nvidia invested $2 billion in Lumentum and its competitor Coherent. The company specializes in advanced indium phosphide devices that support high-speed cloud computing and data transmission. Michael Hirston, CEO of Lumentum, based in San Jose, California, told reporters in Tokyo on Friday that demand for some products will remain unmet by about 70% next year, while other products will face a 30% shortfall through 2028.
