The establishment of this joint venture signals a strategic shift toward solving the critical infrastructure bottleneck of aligning data center power capacity with compute deployment in China's major urban centers. By coordinating electricity and computing timelines, Guangzhou aims to create a scalable model for sustaining high-density AI workloads without being constrained by grid limitations. This move directly impacts the physical viability of large-scale AI training and inference hubs within the Greater Bay Area.
Guangzhou Establishes Computing Power Industry Development Company to Explore 'Guangzhou Model' of Ultra-Large City Computing-Electricity Integration
36Kr reports that, according to the Guangzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the Guangzhou Computing Power Industry Development Co., Ltd. was officially established recently. The company is majority-owned by Southern Power Grid Digital Grid Group and jointly funded by Guangdong Yixun Technology (a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Telecom), Guangzhou Data Science Group, and Guangzhou Hengyun Group. As the nation's first central-local joint venture platform with computing-electricity coordination as its core mission, this marks a key step for Guangzhou in building a city-level computing power supply system. Moving forward, Guangzhou will use the municipal computing company as a lever to accelerate the construction of a comprehensive, interconnected, and collaboratively scheduled computing network; coordinate planning to align the timing of computing and electricity infrastructure development; continuously expand high-quality computing power supply; build a real-time inference computing hub in the Greater Bay Area; and inject strong momentum into the high-quality development of the artificial intelligence industry.
