The work offers a quantitative metric, iso-frequency contour straightness, for judging how well emission from quantum emitters in photonic crystal slabs is directed, which replaces earlier qualitative comparisons. The reported gains in single-emitter efficiency and superradiant intensity are research-stage results, not demonstrated devices. For quantum hardware readers, the value is a more reproducible benchmark for on-chip single-photon sources and emitter arrays.

Integrated quantum emitters now emit light with greater control

Quantum Zeitgeist5 min read

Researchers improved control over the direction of light from integrated quantum emitters, achieving more efficient unidirectional emission in photonic crystal slabs.

Jun Ren of The University of Hong Kong and colleagues have developed a new method for controlling the direction of light emitted from quantum emitters. The researchers implemented Fourier-transform analysis of radiation patterns and a quantitative metric, iso-frequency contour straightness, to systematically evaluate directional quality of emission in photonic crystal slabs. This work demonstrates single-emitter radiation efficiency enhancement alongside low-loss unidirectional propagation, and achieves scalable intensity amplification and superradiant emission through cooperative effects. The combination of photonic band engineering and collective emitter coupling is able to realize spatiotemporal coherence control in quantum emitter arrays. Iso-frequency contour straightness is now a quantitative benchmark for evaluating the…
