Researchers at Georgia Tech have developed new diagnostic tools based on relative entropy to accurately identify chirality in complex, decohered topological phases where standard methods fail. By quantifying information loss between mixed and pristine parent states via replica techniques, this work addresses a critical gap in characterizing realistic quantum materials that previous diagnostics could not handle. This advancement is essential for advancing the practical application of topological quantum computing by providing reliable metrics for systems affected by environmental noise.

Georgia Institute of Technology: Researchers Identify New Methods to Detect Chirality in Complex States

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min read

Established methods for identifying chirality fail when applied to complex quantum states, revealing a fundamental gap in our understanding of topological phases. These systems, unlike their simpler counterparts, require entirely new diagnostic tools based on relative entropy to accurately assess chirality and quantify the chiral central charge. This advance offers a means to characterise decohered topological phases with a known parent state, where previous techniques proved unreliable.

Shijun Sun from the Georgia Institute of Technology and colleagues, working with King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, have found that standard methods for identifying chirality in topological phases fail when applied to mixed quantum states. The study reveals that established diagnostics, including bulk-boundary correspondence and the modular commutator, are unreliable in these complex systems. Consequently, the research presents two new measures based on relative entropy to accurately diagnose chirality and determine the chiral central charge in decohered topological phases, indicating a need for a new set of tools when investigating mixed-state topology. Relative entropy, a measure of divergence between probability…
