This research introduces "routing codes," a new class of quantum LDPC architectures that significantly reduce physical qubit overhead by approximately eightfold compared to standard surface codes. By prioritizing parallel connections and minimizing complex wiring requirements, these designs directly address the hardware scalability bottlenecks currently limiting fault-tolerant quantum computing platforms like superconductors and neutral atoms. The breakthrough offers a practical pathway toward building larger, more feasible quantum processors without compromising error correction capabilities.

Duan and Colleagues Design Routing Codes for Simplified Quantum Hardware Realization

Quantum Zeitgeist6 min read

Weight-7 routing codes now require only an eighth of the physical qubits needed to achieve equivalent error correction to surface codes. This reduction stems from a new family of quantum LDPC codes designed with simplified hardware requirements in mind. By prioritising parallel connections and reduced qubit connectivity, these routing codes offer a pathway towards building larger, more practical quantum computers.

A new family of quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes, termed routing codes, addresses key hardware limitations hindering the development of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing. Jiaxuan Zhang of Hefei Co, in collaboration with University of Science and Technology in china, and colleagues show that these codes achieve encoding rates comparable to existing bivariate bicycle (BB) codes, but with sharply improved physical feasibility through reduced qubit connectivity and shorter, parallel non-local couplings. The new approach fundamentally simplifies hardware implementation for platforms like superconductors and neutral atoms by eliminating wiring crossings and streamlining atom movement scheduling. Circuit-level simulations reveal that these weight-7 routing codes reduce physical qubit overhead by…
