This research advances quantum metrology by demonstrating how engineered dissipation and squeezed light can exponentially enhance parameter estimation in open systems. By exploiting high-order field correlations rather than linear channels, the study establishes a new design principle for dissipative quantum sensors that turns energy loss into a resource.
Amplified fluctuations from squeezed light improve quantum sensing

Dissipative quantum sensing benefits from harnessing nonlinear effects—specifically, how squeezed light can dramatically boost multiphoton fluctuations.
The transition rates of multiphoton dissipative processes directly depend on high-order field correlations, distinguishing them from simpler, linear channels and revealing a unique sensitivity to quantum fluctuations. This work explores how engineered dissipation, exploiting loss, emission and relaxation, can improve parameter estimation in quantum systems, even when dissipation is unavoidable. Researchers demonstrate that independently squeezed optical modes create local fluctuations, while jointly squeezed fields produce intermode correlations directly linking absorption and emission. The study establishes two distinct scaling structures for dissipative multiphoton sensing determined by the architecture of the squeezing applied to driving fields. Multiphoton absorption and emission processes offer a unique pathway to enhanced quantum sensing by directly using the correlations within light fields, unlike traditional linear methods. This sensitivity allows for parameter estimation in open quantum systems where energy loss is an exploitable resource. The ability to engineer dissipation, to control loss, emission and relaxation, is central to this approach, offering a new paradigm for quantum metrology. The scaling of sensitivity in these sensors is dictated by how the driving fields are…
