NVIDIA and Cisco's introduction of the USFP form factor represents a critical infrastructure advancement for scaling AI data centers, offering significantly higher bandwidth density and improved energy efficiency per bit transmitted. By enabling connections between more compute systems without adding network layers, this development directly addresses the physical bottlenecks inherent in expanding high-performance AI training clusters.
NVIDIA and Cisco Launch New Pluggable Optical Module Form Factor to Expand AI Factories
NVIDIA and Cisco have jointly launched a new pluggable optical module form factor, USFP (Ultra Small Form-factor Pluggable), designed to expand the scale of AI factory networks. USFP is the first module supporting 400Gb/s per lane, with a maximum single-module capacity of up to 12.8Tb/s, enabling AI builders to connect more compute systems without adding network layers while reducing power consumption per bit transmitted. Compared to existing 200Gb/s-per-lane optical modules, USFP offers four times the bandwidth density and 1.3 times the energy efficiency. NVIDIA and Cisco are collaborating with TE Connectivity and Amphenol to build a multi-source hardware ecosystem around USFP.
