Samsung Electro-Mechanics Plans Nearly $5 Billion Expansion for Semiconductor Substrates in South Korea and Vietnam

According to reports, Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to invest nearly $5 billion in South Korea and Vietnam by 2028 for semiconductor substrate production, further strengthening Vietnam's role in manufacturing key components for AI servers and high-performance computing. As an electronic component subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced two FC-BGA (Flip Chip Ball Grid Array) substrate investment plans last week. The product is used in AI servers, robots, and smart car chips. One investment amounts to 4.27 trillion won ($3.2 billion) for the Sejong facility in South Korea, representing the company's largest single-product investment to date; the other totals 2.51 trillion won ($1.87 billion) for its Vietnamese subsidiary. The company previously announced in 2022 that it would test FC-BGA substrates at a facility in Thai Nguyen Province, northern Vietnam. This expansion indicates that trial production results met expectations, and the company is now ready to move into mass production. (Caixin Global)
