Three Departments: Accelerate Electric Ship Deployment in Passenger and Freight Scenarios Within 300 Kilometers and Under 3,000 DWT

36Kr1 min read

36Kr reports that the Ministry of Transport and two other departments have issued a notice on the 'Action Plan for Promoting the Application of New Energy Ships on Inland Waterways (2026–2030)'. The plan calls for accelerating the adoption of electric ships in passenger and freight scenarios covering distances under 300 kilometers and vessels with a deadweight tonnage below 3,000. Electric cargo ships will be promoted for medium- and short-distance container and bulk cargo transport on inland waterways or fixed routes involving sea-river direct navigation; electric passenger ships will be promoted for sightseeing in riverside areas and lake reservoirs, as well as ferry services. The use of battery-powered vessels is encouraged for government service ships, port work vessels, and yachts. Methanol-powered ships will be expanded for long-distance, large-tonnage freight scenarios. For long-distance transport involving sea-river direct navigation and intermodal shipping, methanol-powered vessels will be promoted for container, bulk cargo, and roll-on/roll-off transport. Local authorities are encouraged to explore the application of hydrogen and other energy sources based on local conditions. The use of renewable energy sources such as biodiesel and green methanol in ships is also supported.
