ASML's forward-looking orders for 2029–2030 confirm that AI-driven chip demand is already stretching supply chains well beyond current planning horizons. The company's response—exploring capacity expansions beyond the previously announced 30% increase—highlights a structural bottleneck in advanced lithography equipment critical for next-generation AI accelerators. This shift underscores how AI compute requirements are fundamentally altering semiconductor capital expenditure cycles and manufacturing timelines.

ASML: Some Customers Have Initiated Discussions on Equipment Orders for 2029 and Even 2030

Cees van der Wal, president and CEO of ASML, stated that customers continue to raise their short- and medium-term demand expectations for ASML equipment, primarily based on their assessment of the scale and duration of investments related to artificial intelligence. As future demand prospects become clearer, some customers have already begun discussions with the company regarding equipment orders for 2029 and even 2030. 'Based on the clearer demand outlook and the sustained momentum in order growth seen so far this year, we expect that supply capacity planned for 2027 and 2028 will still be insufficient to fully meet customer needs. Therefore, we are exploring ways to further increase our 2028 production capacity to achieve more than the previously announced 30% increase. At the same time, we will continue to help customers significantly boost wafer production capacity by upgrading our product mix and improving production efficiency.' (Cailian Press)
