Germany Plans Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax Starting in 2027
A proposal to impose a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages has been submitted to Germany's cabinet. If approved, the tax will take effect on July 1, 2027, exempting smaller producers. Under the plan, beverages with at least 5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters would be taxed at 26 cents per liter, while those with 8 grams or more would face a rate of 32 cents per liter. Drinks using sweeteners and pure juices are excluded from the tax, as are non-alcoholic beer, non-alcoholic wine, and beverages made from soy, nuts, seeds, or grains. The German government is expected to approve the proposal on the 14th. The tax is projected to generate approximately €690 million in revenue in 2027 and €925 million in 2028.
