This research demonstrates a significant advancement in quantum-enhanced medical imaging by introducing dynamic interval encoding for grayscale CT reconstruction on near-term hybrid hardware. By optimizing binary variable allocation, the method achieves superior image fidelity and noise reduction compared to traditional analytic or iterative techniques using limited computational resources. The findings validate that specific optimization strategies can effectively leverage current D-Wave solvers to solve complex data consistency problems in sparse-view imaging scenarios.

Can computed tomography accurately reconstruct images with limited computational power? A new framework utilising dynamic interval encoding and quantum optimisation now recovers structures and grey-level distributions more faithfully than existing analytic and iterative methods. This approach adaptively manages binary variables, potentially enabling complex medical imaging on near-term quantum devices.

A new framework for grayscale computed tomography (CT) reconstruction, based on quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation (QUBO), has been presented by Ao Wang and colleagues at Peking University, in collaboration with Pattern Recognition Lab. The approach tackles limitations in existing image encoding techniques by using dynamic interval encoding, concentrating computational effort on active pixels within local gray-level intervals. This method balances data consistency with an edge-preserving prior, and it recovers structures and gray-level distributions more accurately than current analytic, iterative, and variational techniques. Importantly, the set of tools is executable on a hardware-backed hybrid quantum, classical backend such as the D-Wave BQM solver. A 3.2dB improvement…
