Veloxity: Towards Memory-Safe UAV Embedded Firmware using the Rust Programming Language

arXiv:2610.41053v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Recent years have witnessed increased momentum towards memory-safe programming languages for safety-critical systems. Memory-safe languages can eliminate entire classes of common software errors that have historically required extensive analysis and expenditure to avoid. Nevertheless, memory-safe language adoption in aerospace remains fragmented and incomplete, particularly for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Recent Rust UAV projects either run only in simulation, are closed source, or have not been integrated with an established autonomy ecosystem and tested against existing C/C++ firmware. To address this gap, we present Veloxity: an open-source embedded UAV autopilot written in the memory-safe Rust programming language. Veloxity lowers the barrier to using memory-safe languages within modern ecosystems by providing a minimal, modular foundation for autonomous UAVs. We compare Veloxity to equivalent autopilots written in C++ in simulation, with hardware testbenches, and via outdoor waypoint-following flight tests, demonstrating functional parity with improved performance. These results indicate that modern memory-safe languages are a viable option for reliable and performant firmware for autonomous aerospace systems.
