Researchers have developed a neural quantum state approach that accurately models hybrid light-matter systems involving Rydberg atoms and over 100 photons, surpassing previous computational limits of conventional methods. This advancement enables precise simulation of ground state phase boundaries in strongly interacting spin-photon systems where traditional mean-field theories previously failed to capture key correlations.

University of Regensburg Team Models Rydberg Atom Systems for Understanding Light-Matter Coupling

Ground state phase boundaries now deviate quantitatively from mean-field predictions, revealing a level of accuracy previously unattainable in these complex systems. This advance stems from a new neural quantum state approach capable of modelling both short- and long-range interactions, particularly in hybrid systems like Rydberg atoms coupled to light. Consequently, simulations of systems with large numbers of photons are now possible, extending beyond the limitations of existing theoretical methods.

Scientists are increasingly employing advanced computational techniques to investigate the intricate behaviour of many-body quantum systems, particularly those exhibiting both short-range atomic interactions and long-range interactions mediated by photons. Noe Salmeron and colleagues at University of Regensburg, in collaboration with the 2Max Planck Institute and the Institute of Quantum Co and for the Physics of Co and Germany, have recently developed a neural quantum state approach for the numerical modelling of these light-matter coupled systems. Their innovative neural network architecture efficiently navigates the complex hybrid quantum spaces characteristic of strongly interacting spin-photon systems,…
