Researchers at the University of Colorado have identified a competition between spin disorder and atomic displacement as the primary driver for metal-insulator transitions in paramagnetic transition-metal oxides. This finding provides a new theoretical framework that explains conductivity variations without relying on complex long-range magnetic ordering or strong correlation effects, offering fresh insights into quantum material behavior.

University of Colorado Team Models Spin Disorder Competition for Paramagnetic Oxide Behavior

A pronounced distribution of local magnetic moments distinguishes metallic NaOsO3 from insulating NaFeO3, challenging previous explanations of behaviour in paramagnetic oxides. Until now, understanding why these materials conduct or resist electricity relied on complex theories of long-range order or magnetic compensation. This work instead reveals a competition between spin disorder and atomic displacement as the key determinant of their metallic or insulating states.

Jia-Xin Xiong of University of Colorado, and colleagues, have elucidated the interplay between magnetic and structural order in determining the metallic or insulating behaviour of paramagnetic transition-metal oxides. The competition between spin disorder, a distribution of varying local magnetic moments, and positional symmetry breaking, caused by atomic displacements, governs the electronic properties of these materials. Their symmetry-broken density-functional theory analysis of NaFeO3 and NaOsO3 reveals that the balance between these two factors dictates whether the paramagnetic phase is metallic or insulating, offering a new…
