This research advances quantum computing foundations by establishing a practical framework for detecting symmetry-protected topological phases using localized entanglement measurements. By reducing detection requirements to interactions between four or six particles, this method paves the way for analyzing complex quantum materials that were previously intractable with global probes. The work represents a significant theoretical step toward characterizing exotic states of matter essential for future fault-tolerant quantum architectures.

University of Chicago researchers defined symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in 2D using nonlocal order parameters derived from entanglement.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have defined a new way to identify symmetry-protected topological phases of matter, resolving a long-standing challenge in two dimensions. The team, including Ramanjit Sohal and Michael Levin of the Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics, shows their order parameters detect symmetry-protected four-party and six-party entanglement, specific degrees of quantum connection within materials. Their approach differs from previous methods by defining order parameters based on expectation values acting on replicas of the system in finite spatial regions. This localized measurement possibility suggests a more practical pathway for analyzing complex materials. The researchers highlight the need for nonlocal probes to characterize these elusive states. This work extends the ability to define SPTs beyond the one-dimensional case, and they expect their methods to generalize to fermionic and higher-dimensional systems. Detecting…
