Researchers at the University of Basel have developed non-perturbative effective Hamiltonians that accurately model hole spin qubits across a wide range of low-dimensional systems without relying on local approximations. This advancement resolves significant energy deviations found in previous perturbative methods, enabling precise simulation and optimization of quantum geometry for nanoscale semiconductor heterostructures. The work establishes a robust framework essential for improving electrical manipulation and control fidelity in practical hole spin qubit devices.
University of Basel Team Models Non-Perturbative Hamiltonians for Hole Spin Qubit Control

Until now, modelling hole spin qubits relied on approximations valid only near a single point, limiting design optimisation. New effective Hamiltonians accurately describe spin-orbit interaction across the entire two-dimensional hole gas, revealing an inherent quantum geometry. This allows for a consistent definition of pseudospin, even far from that limiting point, and opens avenues for improved qubit control.
A thorough quantum geometrical description of hole spin qubits has been detailed by Zoltán György from the University of Basel and colleagues. The spin-orbit interaction, key for rapid electrical manipulation of qubits, originates from both the two-dimensional hole gas and in-plane confinement, each component displaying distinct characteristics. Their non-perturbative effective Hamiltonians, derived numerically for various low-dimensional hole systems including nanowires and heterostructures, accurately model qubit behaviour and reveal limitations to achieving perfect spin-orbit switching functionality. A meaningful definition of pseudospin applicable even far from the Γ-point is offered, providing a strong framework for understanding and optimising hole spin qubit performance.
