The University of Delaware's new 3+2 program directly addresses the critical skills gap in quantum information science by creating an accelerated pathway for students to transition from undergraduate research into advanced master's studies. This initiative specifically targets industry needs for technicians proficient in nanofabrication and device manufacturing, offering a cost-effective route that combines core technical knowledge with essential hands-on experience. By enabling direct entry into the workforce or further research roles, the program aims to rapidly expand the pool of qualified professionals required for the emerging quantum sector.

Brothers Michael & Tyler Manfre accelerated their path to a master of science in quantum science and engineering via UD’s 3+2 program, completing bachelor’s at West Chester University.

Ocean County College saw an unusual return when Michael Manfre, having previously left to build a business in California, reenrolled alongside his younger brother Tyler. The pair then became the first to utilize a new accelerated pathway into quantum information science: a 3+2 program established by Brandon Mitchell of West Chester University and Matthew Doty of the University of Delaware. Doty said, allowing Tyler and Michael Manfre to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees and gain valuable hands-on experience in a rapidly developing field. The University of Delaware’s new 3+2 program enabled Michael and Tyler Manfre to transition directly from undergraduate research into advanced quantum studies, a pathway previously unavailable to students. This accelerated route, combining three years…
