Twisted bilayer cuprates break symmetry, hinting at new quantum states

The researchers investigate multicomponent superconductivity in twisted bilayer cuprates with order parameter s + d_1e^(iφ_1) + d_2e^(iφ_2), where s = s_1 + s_2 is the layer-symmetric s-wave pairing and d_i is the d-wave pairing in layer i. When φ_1-φ_2 ≠ 0,π, this state spontaneously breaks time-reversal and C_4 rotational symmetries and can realize a topologically nontrivial phase.

Yu-Hang Li of Nankai University, Congjun Wu of Westlake University, and Wang Yang have identified a surprising mechanism for topological superconductivity in twisted bilayer cuprates. Their work reveals a three-component superconducting state, described by the order parameter s + d1eiφ_1 + d2eiφ_2, that breaks both time-reversal and C4 rotational symmetries when φ1–φ2 is not equal to 0 or π. The researchers demonstrate that this symmetry breaking can realize a topologically nontrivial phase, and their results show that s-wave pairing does not preclude chiral topological superconductivity, suggesting twisted cuprates are…
