This theoretical study demonstrates how planar trivalent qubit architectures can drastically reduce hardware overhead for fault-tolerant quantum computing. By limiting each qubit to three neighbors instead of four, the proposed lattice-surgery protocol lowers both ancillary qubit requirements and two-qubit gate counts by an order of magnitude compared to standard surface-code implementations. These findings offer a promising pathway toward scaling up physical resources without compromising logical performance in error-corrected systems.
Trivalent qubit layouts with fluxonium cut gate count by order of magnitude

Trivalent qubit layouts—using degree three connectivity—can reduce two-qubit gates needed for lattice surgery, and thus the fluxonium cut, by an order of magnitude.
A new theoretical study suggests that simplifying how qubits are connected could substantially reduce the hardware requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University, Yale University, Yale Quantum Institute, and Atlantic Quantum have developed a lattice-surgery protocol for planar trivalent qubit architectures, where each qubit connects…
