Tencent Quantum Laboratory has successfully developed a new family of quantum error correction codes that achieve logarithmic scaling of logical qubits without the typical increase in circuit complexity. This breakthrough, termed "phantom" due to its ability to expand capacity while maintaining fixed distance, offers a critical pathway toward practical fault-tolerant quantum computing by decoupling performance growth from overhead costs. The theoretical significance is further highlighted by the proof that identifying such codes is computationally equivalent to solving the Graph Isomorphism problem.

Tencent Quantum Team Proposes Scalable, Rate-Optimal Quantum Error Correction

Previously, building quantum error correction capable of scaling alongside increasing computational demands meant accepting ever more complex circuitry. Now, constructions achieving both arbitrary fixed distance *and* logarithmic growth in encoded qubits, k = Θ(log n), demonstrate that efficient fault tolerance is not necessarily tied to escalating overheads. Determining if a code possesses this advantageous ‘phantom’ property has also been proven as difficult as solving the Graph Isomorphism problem.

Constructing quantum error correction codes capable of simplifying complex calculations has long been a challenge for physicists. Rui Mao, Weixiao Sun, and Shengyu Zhang at Tencent Quantum Laboratory have now created the first-rate optimal phantom quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) code families that achieve maximal logical scaling, where the number of encoded logical qubits grows logarithmically with system size, and an arbitrary fixed distance. New quantum error correction codes expand computational capacity without increasing complexity; these ‘phantom’ codes…
