The paper shows that entangled codewords do not raise classical communication rates over a broad class of phase-covariant quantum channels, extending earlier results beyond qubits and depolarizing channels. For quantum networking researchers, this narrows where entanglement-assisted encoding is worth pursuing. The result is theoretical, and its scope is limited to the channel classes studied.

Syracuse University Bounds Quantum Channel Advantages

Entanglement’s benefit in boosting classical data transmission over quantum networks remains elusive, even when employing complex encoding schemes. Extending previous findings beyond depolarizing channels, this work now demonstrates *no* rate improvement from entangled codewords across an entire class of physically realistic “phase-covariant” quantum pathways. This narrows the search for scenarios where entanglement truly enhances communication, suggesting many practical systems may not need it at all.

The research confirms there is no advantage to entangling codewords when transmitting classical information over quantum channels; entanglement does not increase communication rates across all phase-covariant channels including multi-level amplitude damping, generalised dephasing, and damping-dephasing types. This finding extends previous work demonstrating a lack of benefit for qubit channels alone, building on results that previously required extremely large channel dimensions to disprove the initial conjecture. There’s no…
